Chief Election commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed has directed the law enforcing agencies to guard against violence, arson and other unlawful activities in eight constituencies where elections will be held on January 16. According to the Election Commission (EC), polls will be held in 8 constituencies in six districts — Kurigram, Gaibandha, Dinajpur, Jessore, Bagura and Laxmipur – where polls on January 5 were suspended because of violence and intimidation. “Miscreants are involved in destroying the harmony of the society through attacks on the minorities in different parts of the country after the election. Whoever they are they will be brought to book,” CEC told newsmen following a meeting at National Economic Council (NEC) yesterday.
The commission held the meeting to take preparation for conducting the polls in 8 constituencies.
Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed said that the people involved in attacks on minorities would be punished as per law.
CEC held the meeting with the principal staff officer, chief of BGB, NSI, RAB and other forces those were involved in maintaining law and order on January 5.
Pointing his finger to the18-party alliance that had vowed to ‘prevent election/boycott election’ the CEC said, “The election violence took different dimension when the major opposition announced such programmes on the demand for caretaker government.”
“The miscreants have no political affiliation. However, law enforcing agencies were asked to arrest them immediately,” the CEC said.
Kazi Rakibuddin said that the armed forces will continue to perform their duties in eight constituencies on polling day on January 16 and the day after to maintain law and order.
