More than 24,000 extra-departmental workers of the postal departmental announced to hold work abstention for 12 days beginning Sunday demanding allowance increase while the country observes0 World Post Office Day today.
The Bangladesh Postal Department will hold a discussion and cultural events at the General Post Office in Dhaka where 40 postal workers will be given awards for their outstanding services.
The extra-departmental workers, meanwhile, said they would enforce a strike for an indefinite period on December 6 in all post offices unless their demands were met by October 21, the Bangladesh Postal Extra Departmental Workers’ Union general secretary, MA Hakim, told New Age on Friday.
He said at a workers’ union meeting on October 2 they decided the agitation programmes.
Twenty-four thousand and thirty-nine extra-departmental workers of categories such as sub-postmasters, agents, delivery agents, mail carriers, night guards and cleaners now work for allowances ranging between Tk 910 and Tk 1,320 a month.
The workers demanded that the allowances should range between Tk 3,200 and Tk 4,500 a month, he said.
More than 8,500 extra-departmental post offices in rural areas do not get festival allowances, he said.
The workers on July 11 called for work abstention to push for their seven-point demands, which included festival and outfit allowance and changes in job policy such as regularisation.
