Muslims across Bangladesh on Thursday celebrated the Eid-ul-Azha with due solemnity, a sense of sacrifice and religious fervour amid monsoon rain.
On this day, the 10th day of Arabic month of Zilhajj on the lunar calendar, some 4,500 years ago, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) offered to sacrifice his beloved son Hazrat Ismail (AS), who willingly submitted to his father’s wish to please the Almighty Allah.
The celebration began with Eid congregations all over the country followed by the sacrifice of cattle heads in the name of Allah.
Eid jamaats were held at mosques and eidgahs across the country where Muslims offered prayers for peace at home and abroad, and harmony among communities.
The main Eid jamaat was held at the National Eidgah ground in Dhaka at 7:30am. Five jamaats were held at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
At Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, the first Eid congregation was held at 7:00am, the second jamaat was held at 8:00am, the third jamaat at 9:00am, the fourth jamaat at 10:00am and the fifth jamaat was held at 11:00am.
Gor-e-Shaheed Baro Maidan in Dinajpur and Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj hosted two of the country’s largest Eid congregations like previous years.
Besides, the congregation was held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament at 8:00am while chief whip of the parliament, whips, cabinet members, lawmakers and Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat officials and employees and devotees joined the jamaat there.
At Dhaka University, Eid Jamaats was held at the university central mosque -Masjidul Jamiya.
Law enforcement agencies, including Rapid Action Battalion and police, took tight security measures.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin and prime minister Sheikh Hasina, in separate messages, had greeted the people of the country as well as the Muslims across the world on the occasion of the Eid-ul-Azha.
The main Eid congregation in Chattogram was held at the Gymnasium ground adjacent to MA Aziz Stadium while the main Eid Jamaat in Khulna was held at the Town Jame Masjid.
In Sylhet, the main Eid Jamaat was held at Shahi Eidgah Maidan.
In Barishal, the main Jamaat was held at the Centrl Hemayet Uddin Eidgah ground.
The main Eid jamaat in Rajshahi was held on Shah Makhdum Central Eidgah Maidan in the city.
Television channels and radio stations are aired special programmes on the occasion.
Special foods were served at hospitals, jails, government orphanages, centres for persons with disabilities, shelter homes and welfare centres.
