Ekushey Padak-winning artist Samarjit Roy Chowdhury passed away at a hospital in Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Sunday. He was 85.
The news of his death was confirmed by the artist’s son, Surajit Chowdhury. Surajit also mentioned how his father’s health had deteriorated over the past three days. Samarjit had been in the hospital since September 5. Initially, he had been taken home after a week.
However, on September 15, he was once again admitted to the hospital due to his poor physical condition. Since then, he had been in the hospital, till his passing today.
Samarjit Roy Chowdhury was born in 1937. He received the Ekushey Padak in 2014, for his contribution to painting.
The body of Samarjit Roy Chowdhury will be kept at the mortuary of the Birdem hospital. On Monday, his body will be brought at the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, between 10 am and 11 am, in order for admirers and well-
wishers to say their last goodbyes to the artist. Afterwards, his body will also be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.
His final rites will be performed at Sabujbagh crematorium in Dhaka.
