Communi-cations Minister Obaidul Quader on Saturday said the next general election must be held by January 25 as per the constitution. Election Commission (EC) will announce the election’s schedule after October to conduct the election by January 25, he told the journalists after inaugurating Digitized Load Control Station on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Baradargarhat in Sitakunda upazila under Chittagong district. He also made a call to the main opposition BNP to attend the parliament sessions to discuss the formation of election-time government.
Referring to opposition-called hartal, Quader said, it was proved ineffective to unseat a government since 1969.
Power of transfer would be held only through election in a democratic way, he said, hartal or blockade could not oust the government.
Stressing the need for political stability in the country, the minister said the nation was suffering due to political unrest.
“Such kind of politics does not deliver well to the nation. It only adds to the people’s sufferings,” he noted.
Regarding the Digitized Load Control Station, Quader said, eight more such load control stations would be set up at different roads across the country.
Of them, four to five would be set up within the tenure of the present government, he said.
Earlier, the minister inaugurated the carpeting work of the four-lane Dhaka- Chittagong highway at Kadamrasul area of Sitakunda upazila.
ABM Abul Kashem MP and project directors, among others, were present on the occasion.
