Rana Plaza Collapse
Eminent citizens condemn BGMEA statement
Thirty five eminent citizens condemned Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association president Atiqul Islam for his statement saying that the collapse of a
building (Rana Plaza) was beyond the owners’ control, as it was ‘an act of God’.
In a statement they claimed that it has now been proved that the owners of the garment factories tried to avoid their responsibilities. They demanded of the BGMEA president to withdraw his statement.
The signatories to the statement are professor emeritus Serajul Islam Chowdhur, columnist Syed Abul Maksud, economist Anu Muhammad, actor Mamunur Rashid, rights activist Khushi Kabir, garments workers leader Moshrefa Mishu, researchers Saydia Gulrukh and Sifa Naznin, professors Nasima Akhtar Hossain, Gitiara Nasreen, Rahnuma Ahmed, Manas Choudhury, Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, Sadaf Noor-E-Islam and Swadhin Sen, political activist Taslima Akhter, writer Omar Tarique Chowdhury, actor Bonna Mirza, development activist Sipra Bose, among other.
On 24 April 2013, Rana Plaza at Savar collapsed killing more than 1,100 people, mostly garment workers, and injuring hundreds of others.
The search for the dead ended on May 13, when 374 workers were still missing, according to a workers’ union.
