The Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh on Saturday said that engineers should be appointed to top posts at engineering organisations to ensure smooth planning and implementation.
Engineers made the demand at a press conference marking the IEB’s 75th founding anniversary and engineer’s Day at the IEB office in the capital, said a press release issued on Saturday.
They said that as engineering organisations required technical knowledge and experience, top positions, including managing directors and chairs, should be held by engineers to ensure the smooth functioning of those organisations.
Engineers were posted in top positions at the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board, the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha and the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation in the past, they said, adding that people without engineering backgrounds are currently holding the top positions
IEB general secretary Md Shahadat Hossain Shiblu said, ‘Although there are vacant posts, most of the engineers across the country are holding acting, additional charge and current charge. Engineers are not getting promotion after holding the same post for 20 years even though there are vacant posts. On the other hand, administration cadre officials are getting more promotion than the approved ones.’
He said that such discrimination against engineers was creating chaos in workplaces.
IEB will hold programmes, including hoisting national and IEB flags at its headquarters, rallies, taking oaths in the morning today (Sunday), he added.
He said that a commemorative programme and a discussion would also be held in the afternoon at about 5:00pm.
The programme will be held at IEB’s 18 centres, 34 sub-centres across the country and 14 overseas chapters on the day.
IEB president Md Nurul Huda chaired the press conference and newly elected general secretary SM Monjurul Haque Monju was present, among others.
