The High Court (HC) yesterday directed the government to take effective steps towards ensuring security of the minority people who came under attacks across the country after the January 5 general election. The High Court in the rule asked the government to explain why repression on the minorities should not be stopped and why it should not be directed to take legal steps against the attackers.
In a suo moto move, the HC comprsing Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain also directed the government to submit a report before it in next seven days after making an assessment of the damage caused by the attacks.
The HC came up with the order following reports published in various national dailies on January 13 on the issue.
Advocate Parimal Chandra Guha placed the report before the High Court judges for passing necessary orders against the incidents of attacks.
The home secretary, inspector general of police and the deputy commissioners of affected districts have been asked to comply with the rule and the directive.
Deputy Attorney General Bishwojit Roy said that the government would take necessary steps to ensure security to the victims of minority group following the HC order.
The miscreants carried out massive attacks on the minority people in Tangail, Bogra, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi, Chandpur and Natore after the 10th parliament election held on January 5.
