Speakers have called for promotion and expansion of environment friendly technologies in leather industry in Bangladesh.
They have also stressed the importance of top-quality leather production for increased export income of the country.
They were addressing a daylong workshop on ‘the use of cleaning technology and better maintenance of machinery in leather industry’ organised by the European Union’s Switch Asia Re-tie Bangladesh project at the Bangladesh College of Leather Engineering and Technology auditorium in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Tanners’ Association are the implementing partners of the project in Bangladesh.
Experts at the workshop said disposal of effluent of the factories into rivers threatened the environment.
They suggest effluent treatment plant for keeping environment pollution free.
The experts also warned of serious health problems due to water and soil pollution by toxic wastes of the industry.
Speakers also said entrepreneurs should use modern machinery for producing high-quality leather as the European Union recently refused low-quality Bangladeshi leather import in its countries.
Two keynote papers on use of cleaning technology and machinery maintenance in the industry were presented at the workshop.
The papers disclosed the barriers to the developing of the sector and also tried to find out the reasons behind its poor condition.
UNIDO International expert Alf Tore Rongved, Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Footwear and Exporters’ Association member Bashet Ali, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce Industry acting secretary Ferdous Ara, Bangladesh College of Leather Engineering and Technology principal Idris Ali and Switch Asia Re-tie Bangladesh project co-coordinator Shariar Shams were present in the workshop.
