Powerful and rich people, including a section of politicians, defy law in various ways to grab forests and wetlands, and pollute environment, says Professor Ainun Nishat, vice-chancellor of BRAC University.
The government, which has ‘good intentions’, is not enforcing the law against encroachers and polluters, he said in an exclusive interview with New Age on Saturday.
Nishat, a leading expert on environment, stressed the need for building pressure by the people in general and consumers in particular to stop encroachment and pollution.
‘We have problems in the state’s intention to enforce the law. For these, the country now requires consumers’ resistance. They can say we will not buy the products of a factory releasing pollutants into the environment and nature,’ he said.
Nishat, a former professor of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, said in the coming years it would be a big challenge to provide water to industries and cooling towers of power generation projects, including the proposed nuclear power plant in Ruppur.
