Speakers here at a meeting stressed the need for creating mass awareness against child marriage to build a better and sound society free from domestic violence, dowry, maternal and child mortality.
Thengamara Mohila Sobuz Sangha (TMMS) under the National Nutrition Programme organised the views-exchange meeting at Sonatola upazila parishad auditorium in the upazila town of Bogra on Saturday.
UNO of Sonatola upazila Khaled Mamun Chowdhury chaired the meeting that was attended by Executive Director of the National Nutrition Programme Biman Kumar Saha as the chief guest.
Senior journalist and News Editor of the Dainik Bogra Chapal Saha, Joint Director of TMMS Mahmudur Rashid, its Assistant Director Selim Akhter, Dr Anwarul Islam and Abdur Rouf, addressed, among others.
The speakers discussed various reasons and superstitions behind the social curse that created unrest in family life and the society.
They said child marriages are still being noticed mostly in remote areas and many housewives are dying during deliveries and giving birth to unhealthy children because of their marriages at premature ages and malnutrition.
They underscored the utter need for concerted efforts of all stakeholders in creating mass awareness against child marriage and its adverse effects to curb the curse once for all from the society.
