Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad has severely criticised the amendment of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Act, which was brought into operation to comply with the demand of the Ganajagaran Mancha. He said such things could only happen in Bangladesh. “Once a judgment is given, it’s given. You can’t pass an amendment in Parliament to change the verdict. But this has happened in Bangladesh,” he added.
Ershad, a former President, was addressing a conference on the occasion of releasing the report of a survey,
conducted by the Jatiya Party Research and Strategy Wing, at Lakeshore Hotel in the city on Tuesday.
The survey stated that 84 per cent of Bangladesh’s population thought that the country was not on the right track due to political instability, while 14 per cent thought that the country was making progress and the rest did not say anything. The survey was conducted in March this year. “Don’t even war criminals have the right to get justice? But the government has bowed to the demands of Shahbagh Square activists to amend the ICT Act. This has never happened anywhere else,” said Ershad.
“The Ganajagaran Mancha has divided the nation and given birth to the Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh (HIB). The HIB is one of the main causes of the defeat of Awami League-backed candidates in the recently concluded city corporation polls across the country,” he added.
