The European Union, The United States and Japan have expressed deep shock at the loss of lives in the collapse of a commercial building in Savar on Wednesday morning.
Heads of missions of EU countries in Bangladesh and US Ambassador Dan Mozena, in separate statements, offered condolences to the families of the victims in the tragedy. “We are greatly saddened to hear of the tragic collapse earlier today of a commercial building in Savar. We are shocked at the loss of so many lives and we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” said the statement, issued by the EU Ambassadors in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.
The statement was issued by Danish Ambassador Svend Olling, Swedish Ambassador Anneli Lindahl Kenny, Italian Ambassador Giorgio Guglielmino, EU Ambassador William Hanna, Spanish Ambassador Luis Tejada Chacón, British High Commissioner Robert Gibson, Dutch Ambassador Gerben Sjoerd de Jong, German Ambassador Dr Albrecht Conze and French Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Babou Kamichetty, Embassy of the Republic of France.
In the condolence message, US Ambassador Mozena said, “I join the people of Bangladesh in mourning for those lost in the collapse of Rana Plaza building in Savar today.” Japanese Ambassador to Dhaka Shiro Sadoshima said, “On behalf of the Government and the people of Japan, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the victims and the bereaved families. I do sincerely hope that the ongoing rescue efforts will save as many people as possible.”
British High Commissioner Robert Gibson also issued a separate statement expressing deep sadness at the loss of lives.
