Member of Swadhin Bangla football team and the assistant football coach of Abahani Limited Amalesh Sen breathed his last at a city hospital around 6:30pm on Saturday. He was 74.
He left behind his wife, two sons and hosts of well-wishers to mourn his death.
Abahani football team manager Satyajit Das Rupu said Amalesh felt sick during team briefing following a training session in the evening at the Abahani club
ground. He was rushed to nearby Bangladesh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dies.
Amalesh, one of the finest midfielders in country’s football history, was born in Bogra in 1943.
He began his football career in the Byton Club of Bogra before he moved to Dhaka, where he played for Fire Service for eight years from 1962 to 1969.
Amalesh joined Mohammedan Sporting Club in 1970 and joined Swadhin Bangla football team during the liberation war in 1971 to earn a permanent place in Bangladesh’s football history.
After the independence, he joined Abahani in 1972 and spent his rest of the career at the club until his retirement in 1984.
He did not sever his tie with Abahani after his retirement and joined the club as one of its coaching staff. He stepped in as interim coach of Abahani many times, especially when the club failed to secure the service of any foreign coach.
Alamesh won host of awards for his huge contribution in country’s football. He won the National Sports Award in 1998.
Amalesh was the fourth veteran footballer to die in recent months after Shamsul Islam, Ainul Haq and Abul Motaleb.
His body will be taken to Abahani club at 9:00am today before crematory.
Bangladesh Football Federation expressed its deep condolence at the sudden death of Amalesh.
