The BNP acting secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has said the anti-Awami League (AL) sentiment is on the rise across the country and the party will face a crisis of existence if Parliament is dissolved on October 24. “The AL will face a crisis of existence soon after dissolving Parliament on October 24. The people are prepared to dismiss the government through intensive movements after Eid. The final round has already started. Only seven days are left for the ruling AL to step down. We have no alternative but to win the game,” he observed.
Alamgir, also the BNP spokesperson, was addressing a meeting, organised by the Dhaka City unit of the party, at the Bhasani auditorium here on Monday afternoon.
He said that the government might try to obstruct the public meeting of the 18-party alliance in the capital on October 25. “Our party chief will announce our last course of action at the rally. We will have to flock to the streets to make the anti-government movement a success,” he added. Alamgir said that people had already taken an anti-AL oath due to the government’s repressive actions. “We wanted to sit across the table to resolve the crisis over the non-party caretaker government issue. But the government has refused to take the path to a peaceful general election,” he alleged.
The BNP leader criticised the government for claiming that the country would turn into a militant state if BNP came to power.
The government was trying to mislead people in the country as well as abroad
by spreading propaganda against the BNP, he said. The AL has planned to hold the national poll, keeping BNP aside from the democratic process, he added.
AL leaders would not be allowed to flee the country without meeting the people’s demand for a general election under a non-party CG oversight, he warned.
Addressing the same programme, BNP vice-chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka asked party workers to be equipped with sharp weapons to face the anti-movement elements on the streets on October 25. “We don’t want to take arms in our hands, but will give a fitting replay if anyone launches attack on us on that day,” he said, adding that the October 25 rally would be held in the capital but permission was yet to be given for the same.
“I demand immediate permission,” he said.
The government wanted to take control of the capital after October 25. “But we will pose a tough opposition and smash the AL armed forces,” he cautioned. He asked law enforcement agencies not to take arms against the people.
“Action will be taken against all those law enforcers who will take anti-people stance during our movement over the CG issue,” he added.
BNP leaders Abdus Salam and others also spoke at the meeting, which was chaired by Khoka.
