Extortion rampant in capital before Eid

Extortion by some high-profile criminal networks continues unabated in the capital before Eid-ul-Fitr although various measures have been taken against such crimes by law enforcers, alleged traders in different city areas.
Intelligence sources admitted that extortion was rampant in all types of business establishments, from luxury shopping complexes to roadside vendors and even construction and real estate sectors. They all have to pay toll on a daily or monthly basis.
A number of businessmen in different corners of the city alleged that they could not complain to the police about the extortion out of fear. Even if they complained, law enforcers hardly took action against the criminals.
The Bangladesh Shop Owners’ Association’s organising secretary Shah Alam Khandaker said that most of the extortionists were active before Eid and they could not be identified as they operated through mobile phones.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner (media and community service), Masudur Rahman, told New Age that they always go for instant action after getting information of any extortion and often nab extortionists.
‘We often don’t get significant information about the toll collectors and so we can’t take immediate action against them,’ he added.
Several incidents of extortion occur in the city every day but most of the cases are not reported to police stations in fear of criminal reprisal, the businessmen said.
A construction worker of Vision Design and Housing Limited at Kalshi Pallabi was shot dead by some miscreants on August 2.
The sub-contractor of the company, Zakir Hossain, on the same day told reporters at DMCH that some local
miscreants named Rony, Rocky and Jamil had earlier demanded toll from him and the miscreants, along with their cohorts came to the site and shot the worker dead.
Zakir said they had filed a general diary after the extortionists had demanded toll, but police took no action.
Sources said around 50 suspected top-criminals now imprisoned in different jails had been controlling extortion ahead of Eid through their sidekicks who are still at large.
