A group of alleged extortionists shot dead a shop employee in the city’s Pallabi area on Sunday evening.
The deceased was identified as Sajib Ahmed, son of Anwar Hossain, a resident of Teker Ghat under Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj.
Sub-inspector Ejazul Islam of Pallabi police station said a group of armed assailants entered Matlab General Store at 12/E, Pallabi at around 7:30pm and demanded Tk 34 lakh from Sajib. As Sajib refused to pay the money, the extortionists opened fire on him, leaving him critically injured.
Sajib, who was shot in the chest, succumbed to his injuries soon after he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 8:30pm, police said.
Nazir Sarkar, owner of the store, was not present during the incident, they said.
Nazir told reporters that some extortionists had been demanding money from him for the past few months.
No case was filed in this connection till filing of this report at around 9:00pm.
