Bangladesh batsman Mosaddek Hossain is unlikely to participate in shorter-format in South Africa as he is yet to recover from eye infection that sidelined him since the home series against Australia.
Mossadek returned to Dhaka from Thailand on Saturday but only with a broken heart as the viral infection in his left eye showed no sign of improvement.‘I don’t know what lies ahead,’ Mossadek told reporters in Mirpur.
‘There is no big improvement and I am not sure when it will be cured,’ he said in choked voice that highlighted his disappointment about the unexpected illness.
The eye infection has already cost Mosaddek two-match Test series against Australia while he could not be included in the Test squad for the South Africa tour.
Mosaddek was part of coach Chandika Hathurusinghe’s plan for both the series after he impressed in his only Test against Sri Lanka in February with a well-built innings of 75 in the first innings.
He played so far 18
one-day internationals
and six Twent20 internationals, making him a firm choice for the shorter-versions as well.
Though BCB is yet to declare the ODI squad for the tour of South Africa, a BCB physician indicated it will be difficult for him to make the South Africa trip with his present condition.
Mossadek has done his check-ups in two separate hospitals in Thailand
after BCB initially treated him in the Eye Hospital and none of these the three hospitals could not set any specific timeframe for his recovery.
‘They are saying it can take several months,’ chief BCB physician Debashish Chowdhury told New Age quoting the hospital sources.
‘No one could give a definite time limit so it would be kind of a miracle if he could make it into the ODI squad for South Africa,’ he said.
However, Debashish remained optimistic that the problem would hardly affect Mosaddek’s career.
‘In very rare cases this kind of illness affects the vision of a person. So, I don’t think it will hamper his career,’ he said.
