Mostafa Sarwar Farooki’s latest movie “Third Person Singular Number” will have its world premiere at the upcoming 14th Pusan International Film Festival, South Korea. The film will participate as part of ‘A Window on Asian Cinema’ category at the festival.
A total of 53 films from 23 countries will be screened in this category. ‘A Window on Asian Cinema’ includes independent films highlighting young directors, who are either creating new waves or playing a pioneering role in an established film industry, according to the festival website.
The festival will continue from October 8 to 16 in the southern port city of Busan, South Korea. According to the website this year’s arrangement of the festival is shattering records by featuring an unprecedented 355 films from 70 countries and 98 world premieres.
Farooki’s film will be screened on October 10 and 13. The director will meet the press after the second show at the festival. “This is the first time a Bangladeshi movie is participating at the Pusan International Film Festival, which is considered as one of the most prestigious festivals of its kind in the world,” says Farooki.
Inspired by Syed Manzoorul Islam’s novel, titled “Tin Parber Jibon O Kichhu Bastab Case Study,” playwright Anisul Haque and Farooki jointly wrote the script for “Third Person Singular Number”.
Featuring interrelationships among a convict serving a life sentence, his wife and an amateur singer, the film poses a question: can a woman, on her own, lead a secure life in our society?
Speaking on the intriguing title of the film, Farooki says, “Literally, ‘third person singular number’ means she or he. Our intention is to point out issues faced by individuals living on the fringes of society.”
Most of the cast members are small screen actors. Farooki says, “Tisha and Musharraf Karim played the central roles — Ruba and Munna. Singer Topu donned the other significant character.”
According to the film-maker, “Third Person Singular Number” will participate in several other upcoming international film festivals.
