A young man allegedly committed suicide after killing his minor daughter at a residential hotel in the city’s Hazrat Shahjalal Dargahgate area on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Alim Ullah, 30, and his two-year-old daughter Sadia Afrin. They hailed from Ashatola in Sadar upazila of Comilla. Quoting Alim’s wife Fatema, police said they came to Sylhe to visit the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) and checked in at Al-Aksa Hotel around 6am.
Exhausted by the long journey, Fatema soon went to sleep in the hotel room. At one stage, she woke up hearing her daughter’s groaning only to see Alim slitting Sadia’s throat, Fatema was quoted by police as saying.
Humayun Kabir, manager of Al-Aksa Hotel, said Fatema rushed to the reception of the hotel and informed them of the killing.
Later, they stormed into the room and confined Alim to it when he tried to commit suicide by jumping off the second floor of the hotel.
However, Alim killed himself by slitting his throat with a knife, the manager added.
On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. Police detained Fatema for interrogation, the OC added.
