Home minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir on Tuesday termed India putting on trial the shocking murder of Felani by its Border Security Force troops as a matter of relief.
Felani was among hundreds of unarmed Bangladeshi civilians who gave life in the hands of trigger happy Indian BSF along the border between the two countries.Alamgir also said that Bangladesh was working to reach a peaceful resolution in this matter through mutual cooperation with neighbouring India.
‘It is really a matter of relief for us as the trial of Felani murder case began on Tuesday as a result of our mutual cooperation with India,’ he said.
The trial began as a result of continued efforts of Bangladesh to ensure justice in Felani murder case, the home minister told reporters at a city hotel.
He expressed the hope that proper completion of the trial of Felani killing case would ensure that no such incident would occur again in future along the Bangladesh-India border.
Two and half a years after the killing of Bangladeshi girl Felani by BSF troops, a BSF court began the trial of the shocking murder along the Cooch Behar border of India.
On January 7, 2011, BSF troops shot Felani dead.
Daughter of Nurul Islam Nuru of Banarvita village in Kurigram, Felani was on her way back home from India through Anantapur border in Kurigram.
After the killing, her body was left hanging from the barbed wire fence India had installed along the border.
The cruel incident triggered worldwide outrage and protests.
Turning to the domestic scene, MK Alamgir said that the hartal called by Jamaat was not observed in the country on Tuesday.
People have no moral support for the Jamaat-called hartal, he said.
For the success of any political programme including hartal, he said, people’s moral support ‘is a must.’
The home minister said that he had given instructions to the law enforcement agencies to take actions against anyone found involved in creating anarchy during the hartal.
Regarding the trespass by BSF troops into Bangladesh at Mathurapur border in Comilla district, Alamgir said the Border Guard of Bangladesh had lodged a protest against the incident.
After high-level meeting between the two sides, he said, steps would be taken to check the recurrence of such incidents in future.
