9,976 nomination papers filed

The election authorities received a total of 9,976 nomination papers from aspirants in 481 upazilas till Saturday, the last date for the filing of nominations for the January 22 polls, the Election Commission said.
Of the total aspirants, 3,562 filed nominations for the post of chairman, 2,968 for the post of vice-chairman (general) and 1,863 for the post of vice-chairman reserved for women.
One candidate submitted nomination for the post of vice-chairman, reserved for women, each at Aditmari in Lalmonirhat, Jamalganj in Sunamganj and Bera in Pabna.
A number of leaders of major political parties, who failed to get party tickets for the December 29 parliamentary elections, also submitted nominations for elections to 481 upazilas.
Returning officers will scrutinise the papers during December 17–19. The last date for the withdrawal of candidature is December 31.
Aspirants to posts of chairman, vice-chairman and women vice-chairman filed their nomination papers amid festivity.
The New Age correspondent in Rajshahi reported aspirants from nine upazilas in Rajshahi had submitted their nomination papers.
Sources in the election office in the district said 70 aspirants had submitted nominations for the post of chairman while 53 for the post of vice-chairman and 39 for the post of vice-chairman reserved for women.
A number of Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders also submitted their nomination papers, the sources said.
The correspondent in Barisal reported 89 aspirants, including 42 from the Awami League, 23 from the BNP, 6 from the Jatiya Party (Ershad) and 4 from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, submitted nomination papers for the post of chairmen in 10
upazilas.
The correspondent in Khulna reported 157 aspirants had submitted their nominations to contest the upazila elections in nine upazilas in Khulna.
According to the district election office, 47 aspirants submitted nomination for the post of upazila chairman, 64 for the post of vice-chairman and 46 for the post of vice-chairmen reserved for women till Saturday.
