One film to hit cinemas today
The producers fear of facing business loss as the downtrend in the film market began again, said the sources at the Bangladesh
Film Producers and Distributors Association.
Only three new films got released in the past five weeks since the last Eid-ul-Adha, when four films had been released and had seen a ‘little profit’.
But the exhibitors, especially the sources at the cineplexes, confirmed that about 10 English films were released during the same period and made profit.
Despite the demand in the market for good films and the fact that about 10 films are ready to hit cinemas after getting clearance from the censor board, only one film will get commercial release this week.
When the producers’ association normally gives clearance to two films per week, only one producer applied to get the release permission this week. Kalam Kaiser’s romantic thriller Tomar Achhi Tomari Thakbo will be released in around 70 cinemas across the country.
Emerging actors Shuvo, Moumita and Nirjana have enacted the major roles in the film.
‘Most films are being produced digitally, but most of the cinemas in our country do not have digital film screening facilities which ultimately reduces the turnovers for the producers,’ said Md Iftekhar Hossain, government appointed administrator of Film Producers and Distributors Committee.
‘We have negotiated with the ministry of cultural affairs and Bangladesh Bank to sanction loans to cinema owners so that they can facilitate digital screening,’ added the administrator.
If this can be done, producers may get an assurance of not falling flat in terms of the turnover. However, the idea of loan is not welcomed by the cinema owners or exhibitors.
‘None of us are interested to invest large amount to digitalise the cinemas; nor are we interested in taking loans,’ said Mia Alauddin, general secretary of Bangladesh Film Exhibitors’ association.
‘In this situation it is quite difficult to see a way out. If good films come and make profits, exhibitors may get interested again and take the necessary steps,’ added Mia Alauddin.
