A devastating fire that broke out in the sixth floor of a 14-storey market at Sadarghat in the Old Town of the city on Friday night, quickly spread to several shops and gutted large stocks of clothes.
Another fire gutted a mini restaurant at sector-7 at Uttara, on the other end of the city.
The fire at sadarghat, however, could not spread to other floors of the market, as fire fighters rushed to contain it.
Fire Brigade and Civil Defence sources said that the fire originated from a garment factory warehouse in the sixth floor of East Bengal Market at around 8 PM.
None, was, however hurt in the fire, as the market was closed, they said.
They said, eight fire engines rushed to the scene and brought the fire
under control by around 9.15 PM.
Abdur Rashid, deputy director of Fire Brigade and Civil Defence told New Age that the cause of the fire could not be known immediately.
But, he said, that the needle of suspicion was immediately pointed at electrical short circuit.
The damage, he said, remained to be estimated.
The fire at the mini restaurant at Uttara broke out at around 7AM, originating from electrical short circuit to engulf the eatery, fire brigade sources said.
They said two fire engines rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after hour-long frantic efforts.
The fire damaged assets worth Tk 25 lakh, Tongi fire brigade estimated.
