First secretary of Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah Md Jamal Uddin is all but certain to be withdrawn from his station for allegedly assaulting a Foreign Service Ministry assistant secretary, Tanvir Kabir, at Jeddah Hajj Camp on July 1. According to sources concerned, based on a report from the Consul General of the Consulate Nazmul Islam, the Foreign Ministry will make a decision soon to withdraw him and send him back to his earlier organisation.
“The Consul General in his report recommended that the first secretary be withdrawn. Usually, the head office entertains the recommendations of the Consul General,” a senior official told The Independent on Wednesday.
“I have sent my report to the headquarters and I am yet to receive any instruction from Dhaka. Next course of action will be taken as per the instruction of the headquarters,” Consul General Nazmul Islam told The Independent over telephone from Jeddah on Wednesday night.
Immediately after the incident on July 1, the Consul General sent an initial report to the Foreign Ministry describing the incident.
“At around 1:30pm (on July 1) Tanvir Kabir came to my office and informed that he was assaulted by Jamal Uddin, First Secretary (Visa),” said the report.
Some other officials, who are not from the Foreign Service Cadre, joined the first secretary in assaulting him.
Nazmul immediately talked to two officials of the Foreign Ministry Mozammel Haque and Jobayed Hosen and they echoed the verbal statement of Kabir. He also discussed the issue with Jamal Uddin.
“During the discussion, he (Jamal Uddin) blamed Tanvir Kabir for the incident while admitting his failure to control his emotion because of continuous workload since his joining,” the initial report said.
In his report on July 4, the Consul General said he had talked with Saidur Rahman, Sub Inspector, and Mohammad Maskoat, sub inspector of the Special Branch team, who are the witnesses to the incident.
“It appeared from their verbal statements that Mr Md Jamal Uddin, First Secretary (Visa) of this consulate, had started the incident,” said the report.
