A Dhaka court on Saturday placed five members of militant group Ansar Ullah Bangla Team on a five-day fresh remand in a case filed under the anti-terrorism act. Detective Branch police inspector Munshi Sabbir Ahmed, also the investigation officer of the case, produced Saiful Islam, 21, Zahidul Islam, 27, Junnun Sikder, 27, Kazi Mohammad Rezwan, 30, and Naimul Hasan, 28, before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court after completion of their first phase of five days police remand. After the hearing, Metropolitan magistrate Ataul Haque granted a five days police remand for interrogation. Earlier, The Detective Branch of police detained Saiful Islam, 21, Abu Hanif, 23, Aminul Islam, 25, Zahidul Islam, 27, Ali Azad, 28, Asad Ullah alias Md Piyas alias Abdullah, 29, Junnun Sikder, 27, Kazi Mohammad Rezwan, 30, and Naimul Hasan, 28, active members of Ansar Ullah Bangla Team on August 24. The Detective Branch police claimed that the arrested nine were close aids of Mufti Jasim Uddin Rahmani, chief of ‘Ansar Ullah Bangla Team’, a follower of International militant organisation Al-Qaeda.
Three laptops, two computers, one video camera, a large number of books on jihad, arms training manual, magazines of the organisation, 25 compact disks (CDs) and nine modems were also seized from their possession.
The law enforcers later filed the case with Mohammadpur Police Station under Section 11, 12 and 13 of the anti-terrorism act. Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan passed the five day remand order after the detectives produced them before the court seeking 10 days’ remand for each on August 25.
After the arrest, officials of the Detective Branch (DB) police claimed that the newly born organisation had been carrying out activities in four phases to establish Shariah based rule in the country by ousting the existing democratic government through an ‘armed revolution’.
