The delicious smell of pithas wafting through the air at Ramna Batamul makes it known that Nabanno festival has finally arrived for the urban dwellers. Nabanno, one of the most celebrated festivals of the country, is one of the greatest times of merrymaking for the farmers, as they harvest their crops at this time. However, the ongoing three-day Nabanno fair at Ramna Batamul presents the city dwellers with an opportunity to derive a flavour of pastoral festival.
The farmers rejoice the month of Agrahayan (Eighth month in the Bangla calendar) with songs, dance and also with preparation of pithas (cake). The urban people, on the other hand, seldom get the chance to taste traditional pithas in their daily life.
The festival, which kicked off on Thursday and scheduled to end today at 8:00pm, features 35 stalls showcasing traditional pithas from different districts including Comilla, Netrokona, Bikrampur, Brahmanbaria and others across the country. The fair is also featuring traditional puppet shows, ferris wheel and many other engaging games and shows.
The stalls have been serving freshly made pithas of different shapes, sizes and flavours including the likes of bhapa, puli, patisapta, chitai, nokshi and many others to the visitors. The event has proved to be a much needed brief getaway where people, from all walks of life, have come with friends and family.
The fair also featured a large stage where artistes from different corners of the country are presenting songs, dances and poems pertaining to the spirit of Nabanno.
Rural artiste Mohammad Ranju’s solo presentation with dhol was the introductory performance on the opening day of the programme. Artistes of cultural organisation Antor presented Chakma dance and Chashi dance at the show on the same day.
The fair has been organised by Showbiz Entertainment and sponsored by Chashi, a brand of Square Food and Beverages.
