Heavy rainfall in Cherrapunji yesterday has caused Surma and Kushiyara rivers to swell worsening the flood situation in Sylhet and Moulvibazar, while conditions improved in other flood-hit districts.
The Kushiyara was flowing 150cm above danger level at Amalshid point yesterday while the Surma was flowing 99cm above the red mark at Kanaighat point, said an official of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
“We cannot predict how long it will take for the waters to recede as it depends on rainfall,” Executive Engineer of FFWC Amirul Hossain told The Daily Star.
However, flood situation is improving in Shariatpur, Madaripur, Faridpur, Manikganj, Munshiganj, Rajbari and the waters will recede completely by next week while Kurigram and Bogra are already free from inundation, he added.
A bulletin issued by the FFWC said water levels at Padma, Meghna and Jamuna rivers will continue to fall while the rivers Kushiyara and Surma will swell further.
Low lying areas of Zakiganj, Beanibazar, Kanaighat, Gowainghat and Fenchuganj upazilas have been inundated by rain water rushing down from the higher Indian states of Meghalaya and Assam due to torrential rainfall in the last 2 days, our Sylhet Correspondent reports.
Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Sylhet Region Md Matiur Rahman said some transplanted Aman saplings have been inundated in different upazilas.
The target for Aman cultivation in the entire division of Sylhet was set at 3.84 lakh hectares this year out of which over 90 per cent has already been achieved, he informed.
Another official at the Relief and Rehabilitation Office of the district said, “We are yet to get reports of damage caused by the floods in the upazilas.”
