Net overseas investment at the Dhaka Stock Exchange fell by 78.58 per cent or Tk 284.98 crore in July compared with that in the previous month due to sluggish market trend and less trading sessions. There will be no trading at the bourse in July due to Eid-ul-Fitr and weekly holidays. The June was a 22 trading-session month while July was a 17 trading-session month.
Till Thursday last week, foreign investors bought shares worth Tk 166.45 crore against their share sales of Tk 86.80 crore, DSE officials said.
Overseas investors bought shares worth Tk 482.51 crore while they sold shares worth Tk 119.87 crore.
As per the data, net overseas investment was Tk 77.65 crore in July against Tk 362.63 crore in the previous month.
Foreign investors’ turnover at DSE stands at Tk 253 crore in July as against Tk 602.38 crore in the previous month.
The net investment grew by 182 per cent in June as their net investment was Tk 362.63 crore in the month against Tk 128.63 crore net investments in May.
The key index of the bourse, DSEX, was at 4,466.61 points at the first trading session of the month which stands at 4,427.15 points on Thursday.
The overseas investors usually purchase shares when they find share prices cheap. On the other hand, they sell shares when the market is in its peak, market operators said.
As the market remained almost flat in July compared with June with poor turnover that kept overseas investors almost silent on the trading floor, they said.
Besides, less trading sessions in July might be another reason behind declined in overseas investors’ participation, they said.
The net foreign investment at the DSE hit a fresh all-time high of Tk 572.08 crore in April this year when they bought shares worth Tk 876.43 crore and sold
shares worth Tk 304.35 crore.
The earlier highest single-month net foreign investment in the bourse was Tk 339.49 crore in June last year when overseas investors had bought shares worth Tk 339.49 crore and sold shares worth Tk 58.30 crore with the total turnover standing at Tk 453.21 crore.
The previous highest monthly net investment by the overseas investors was Tk 251 crore in July 2007.
As per the DSE data, net overseas investment was Tk 128.63 crore in May as against Tk 572.08 crore in April.
The net overseas investment at the DSE declined to Tk 96.96 crore in March from Tk 121.04 crore in February.
