Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque has been elected as the Committee on the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (CMW). He polled 39 votes to get elected in the election that took place in New York on Thursday. This is the second highest number of votes bagged by any candidate at this election, said a Foreign Ministry press release on Friday. The Foreign Secretary will serve as an independent expert in the Committee. Moreover, 46 state parties to the International Convention of the rights of all Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (ICRMW) elected seven new experts for CMW in New York for three years from January next year. Bangladesh ratified the Treaty on 24 August 2011. The CMW is a 14 member treaty body that monitors the ICRMW State parties’ adherence to these only human rights instruments for migrant workers, and also promotes the treaty for ratification by non-state parties. This is the first time Bangladesh has become a members of CMW.
