Rapid Action Battalion yesterday in an anti-adulteration drive fined four factories in old Dhaka for producing adulterated vermicelli and fraud in marketing the product.
Rab-10 along with the members of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institute (BSTI) raided Kamrangirchar, Lalbagh and Chawk Bazar areas from 11:30am to 4:30pm to check adulteration of the item.
Magistrate Anwar Pasha who led the drive told The Daily Star that because of ensuing Eid-ul Fitr the demand of vermicelli is very high in the market.
In the raid on seven factories, one puffed rice [Muri] and two vermicelli factories were found producing the popular items fulfilling the requirements of BSTI.
The mobile court fined the rest four firms. Of those Khushi food products, a vermicelli factory, owned by Mofizul Islam of Ashrafabad in Kamrangirchar was fined Tk 50,000 for drying vermicelli in an unhygienic environment on a house roof, Abul Hossain’s Nasir food industries on Madrasa Road of Kamrangirchar was fined Tk 50,000 for the same irregularity.
Kazi Sumon of Chawk Bazar Champatuli Lane was fined Tk 1 lakh for buying vermicelli from open market at Kamrangirchar and marketing them under the name of famous companies. As he did not pay the fine the mobile court gave him two months’ jail sentence.
Shahidul Alam at Chawk Bazar was fined Tk 1 lakh on charges of making spurious Maggi and Fuji noodles and marketing those items.
