A teenage girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in the city’s Manikdi under Cantonment on Saturday night, after being scolded by her father.
Police recovered the body of Jannatul Ferdous Nova, 17, an HSC student of BAF Shaheen School and College from her study room at her residence in Manikdi around 8:00pm.
Nova’s father, Mominul Islam said earlier that afternoon, he had reprimanded her for neglecting her studies and missing her classes.
After being scolded, Nova, the eldest of two sisters, locked herself into the study room and did not respond to any of their pleas for hours, he said.
Her mother Rehana Parveen is an expatriate and resides in the UK.
Police sent the body to Dhaka Medical College (DMC) morgue for autopsy. Sub-Inspector of Cantonment Police Station, Khorshed Alam said an unnatural death (UD) case has been filed in this connection.
