A class-VII girl committed suicide yesterday after being subjected to stalking in Dakkhin Keraniganj area, alleged the victim’s family.
Thirteen-year-old Amena Akhter, daughter of Md Habibullah, was a student of Baghapur High School and College. According to family sources, Amena’s mother found her hanging from the ceiling fan in her room. Amena was then rushed to a local hospital where the doctors announced her dead.
Tanveer Ahmed, Amena’s cousin, told this correspondent that Md Saidul, a class nine student in her school, along with his accomplices used to stalk Amena on her way from home to school.
Amena’s guardians repeatedly informed to Saidul’s parents about the matter but to no avail.
Saidul threatened Amena’s father Habibullah of kidnapping her over the mobile phone on Saturday morning. Enraged, Habibullah along with relatives and neighbours went to Saidul’s house and threatened to take legal action against him.
Later in the evening, Kohinoor Begum, Saidul’s mother, along with relatives went to Amena’s house and held her responsible for the situation and insulted her.
These events led to her suicide, Amena’s family said.
Sakhawat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Dakkhin Keraniganj police station, confirmed receiving a written complaint about stalking and said that police have been trying to nab the accused persons.
The body was taken to Sir Salimullah Medical College morgue for a post-mortem.
