18 named, 10-12 unnamed people accused of rape, abduction, torture in line with HC orders
In line with the High Court order, police yesterday recoded a fresh case in connection with the death of rape victim Hena Akter against 18 named and 10-12 unnamed people on five charges.
The accused are facing the charges of rape, abduction, hatching conspiracy, holding unlawful assembly and torture in the case filed by Hena’s mother Aklima Begum.
Abul Khair, officer-in-charge of Naria Police Station, said “We have filed the case in accordance with the High Court order. We did not bring the charge of issuing Fatwa as there is no specific law in this regard.”
“However, in the case we have mentioned the issuing of Fatwa and also its effects,” he added.
He said the six persons detained after filing of the first case would be shown arrested in the latest one tomorrow.
On Thursday, the HC issued upon the government eight directives that include filing of the fresh case.
Fifteen-year-old Hena Akter was flogged to death following a fatwa (religious edict) at Chamta in Naria, Shariatpur last month.
The HC came up with the directives as an autopsy conducted at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on exhumation of her remains found injuries all over the body. But both police inquest and a previous autopsy at Shariatpur had mentioned none of those.
The court also asked inspector general of police to take action against Sub-Inspector Aslm Uddin for submitting false inquest report and Inspector Mirza AK Azad for not recording the case properly.
OC Abul Khair said the earlier case filed by Hena’s father Darbesh Kha on February 2 accusing the same 18 on murder charges, has already been transferred to Criminal Investigation Department and will continue separately.
In connection with the first case police arrested alleged rapist Mahbub Khan, his wife Shilpi Khan, Idris Sheikh, Joynal Meermalot, Ala Box Karati and Hafez Md Mofiz Talukder.
Darbesh complained to HC that taking chance of his illiteracy police filed the case completely ignoring the allegation of rape.
The named accused are Mahbub Khan, Shilpi Khan, Jahanara Begum, Morsheda Begum, Idris Sheikh, member of Chamta union parishad, Akkas Meermalot, Yeasin Meermalot, Dil Mohmmad Meermalot, Ala Box Karati, Joynal Meermalot, Latif Meermalot, Abdul Hai Meermalot, Hafez Md Mofiz Talukder, Saiful, Monimala, Robiul Khan, Hasan Meermalot and Jamal Shikder.
Sub-Inspector Kazi Kamal Hossain of the police station has been made investigation officer of the case.
