Restrictions will be imposed on cars on city streets to reduce congestion, Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain said yesterday in parliament.
The government is also mulling, among other measures, to enact a law to control the buying of cars and sports utility vehicles, he said replying to lawmakers’ queries.
He said the government plans to construct circular railway to reduce traffic jams and work is going on to prepare Development Project Proforma for this. He said the mass transport system will be improved.
“…the restriction on the plying of cars will be imposed in line with the recommendations of the coordination and monitoring committee to reduce traffic congestion,” the minister said.
The other measures include: introduction of modern taxi service, stopping CNG conversion of non-commercial small vehicles, relaxation of loan conditions for purchasing large buses, imposing restriction on setting up new CNG filling stations, discouraging the use of more than one vehicle by a single family.
The minister said 300 air-conditioned buses, 200 double- deckers and some large buses will be added to the mass transportation network in the next few months to strengthen the system.
Besides, 150 more air-conditioned buses will be collected from Korea by June this year, which will ply the streets of Dhaka city and other divisional headquarters. He said 100 more air-conditioned buses will be purchases under Indian credit scheme.
