The government plans to import onions from Nepal and Myanmar through the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh aimed at checking the essential’s price, officials said on Thursday.
In local markets, onions were sold at Tk 60-65 per kilogram on Wednesday. Prices of locally produced onions were Tk 48 last week while imported (Indian) Tk 44.‘Apart from India, we’re looking for alternative countries, like Nepal and Myanmar, to import onions for checking its price hike,’ additional commerce secretary Monoj Kumar Roy told BSS.
Referring to the soaring prices of onions in local market, Roy said prices of onions are also high in the Indian market.
He said the commerce ministry convened a meeting on Sunday where the ministry officials would meet onion importers.
‘We will try to figure out the exact reasons behind the price hike of the essential and provide all out support to the importers to bring down the onion price.’
‘The ministry will facilitate on borders if businessmen want,’ said the official.
The ministry has already directed the TCB chairman to look into the matter of importing onions from other countries where prices of the essential are lower, a source in the ministry said.
