Main opposition BNP on Friday alleged that the government had been conspiring rig vote in Saturday’s Gazipur City Corporation election. BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed made the allegation at an emergency press conference at party’s central office at Naya Paltan on Friday. “We have come to know from various sources that the ruling party has mobilised identified terrorists in Gazipur to occupy polling centres for stuffing ballot papers. People are being intimidated in 99 risky poling centres,” he alleged.
The BNP leader also accused the ruling party people of distributing huge amount of money to appease police and circulating leaflets in favour of government-backed candidate by a special agency.
He also alleged that they are intimidating elderly people to prevent them from going to the polling centres to cast their votes.
Rizvi Ahmed, also office secretary of the party, called upon the Election Commission to take necessary measures so that people could go to polling centres without any fear.
He criticised the EC for not appointing required number of election observers to oversee the poll and engaged only 10 judicial magistrate against 392 polling centres. He termed the EC’s move as ill-motivated.
The BNP leader called upon the EC to hold the election in a free and fair manner.
He hoped that the 18-party backed candidate MA Mannan would win the GCC poll with a huge margin
of votes if the election is
held in a free and fair atmosphere.
