The government in a press note on Thursday sought cooperation of the people to implement the planned Rampal power plant project.
The press note said the government has taken initiatives to install the 1,320 MW coal-based power plant jointly with India at Rampal in Bagerhat. But, a segment of people and few organisations are spreading propaganda against the initiative to mislead the people though the project is incredibly important for the country.
The government under its ‘Vision-21’ has planned
to ensure power for all at a reasonable price. To implement the mega plan in power sector in line with the vision-21, the country has to generate 23,000 MW power by 2021 while 40,000 MW by 2030.
To achieve the goal, the government by taking immediate, short, medium and long-term plans has boosted power generation to 9,713 MW from 4,942 MW through setting up 57 power stations in last five years, which is an extraordinary achievement for the government, added the press note.
Now, the country is compelled to put concentration on the alternative source of fuel for power generation, as the reserve of gas is being decreased day by day. In developed and developing countries, coal is being used as the alternative fuel for power generation at low cost.
The press note said, the government has taken the India-Bangladesh joint venture for 1320 MW coal based power plant at Rampal as part of a long-term plan.
The power plant is situated 14 kilometres away, a safe distance, from Sundarban and 72 km from the National Heritage Site, declared by the UNESCO, said the press note, adding that the power plant would be set up using a super critical technology.
The power plant would be run by high quality imported coal, which has a nominal carbon, sulphur, fly ash and other ingredients of air pollution. So, there would not be any adverse impact of the power plant, added the press note.
It said the Rampal power plant would be implemented complying with the recommendations of the Environmental Impact Assessment report formulated by the Department of Environment.
Socioeconomic conditions of the people would be improved if the power plant is implemented in the poverty prone areas, which would also develop the livelihood standard of the poor people, as it would decrease the dependability of the people on the natural resources of Sundarban and biodiversity of the world’s largest mangrove forest would be saved.
To implement the state-of-the-art technology-based project for meeting the growing demand of power, the government is seeking cooperation from every conscious and patriotic citizen, the press note added.
