In response to the disappointment expressed by different influential countries and organisations over the 10th parliamentary election, the foreign ministry has decided to engage them in dialogues soon to explain the necessity of holding the polls. “We are going to extensively engage the countries, which are issuing statements on the 10th parliamentary election, in dialogues. We will hold series of meetings with them,” a senior official of the foreign ministry told The Independent yesterday.
“Foreign diplomats stationed in Dhaka and the foreign governments through our missions will be contacted.” he said.
“During the meetings, we will explain them the position of the government and the constitutional obligation to hold the election,” said the official.
Foreign ministry officials in Dhaka and abroad would convey development stakeholders about the prime minister’s call for a dialogue to the opposition on next general election, he added.
Following the completion of the polls on Sunday, development partners such as the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia have expressed disappointment over the holding of an ‘one-sided polls’. The United Nations and Commonwealth have also issued statements expressing their disappointments.
All these countries and organisations are of the opinion that the will of people has not been reflected in the polls and urged the government and the opposition to hold a dialogue immediately to ensure fresh, credible, and inclusive polls that would reflect the opinion of the people of the country.
