Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina becomes emotional at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday said her government would work for the balanced development of all people, irrespective of their caste and creed.
“We’ll work for the development of all equally and won’t discriminate between whoever had voted for us or not,” she told a gathering of local people at the Tungipara mazar complex of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Hasina, also the Awami League president, said: “The massive victory of Awami League-led Grand Alliance in the 9th parliamentary elections has entrusted us with a great duty and responsibility towards the nation.”
She directed the leaders and activists of Awami League and its front organizations to take “this victory as the responsibility towards the nation and work with patience.”
The Prime Minister sought blessings of all irrespective of party affiliation and belief so that she could be successful in ruling the country and fulfill the expectations of the people.
She said: “The people of the country were in despair for the last seven years… we want to bring a qualitative change in the politics of the country so that people can have three meals a day.”
Hasina pledged to reintroduce some programmes like allowances to the freedom fighters, elderly allowance, widow allowance, ‘asrayan’ housing projects and community clinic scheme.
She recalled the contributions of Awami League in the Language Movement, Liberation War in 1971 and democratic movements in the 90s.
Hasina extended her special thanks to the people of Gopalganj, Bagerhat and Rangpur districts from where she contested in the national elections and got elected from three seats. “I want to utilise the opportunity the people have given me this time,” she said.
Earlier, in the morning, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed wreaths at the mazar of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman paying tributes to the architect of Bangladesh’s independence.
She offered fateha and prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul of Bangabandhu and progress and prosperity of the people as well as world humanity. She also attended a milad mahfil at the mazar premises.
Our Staff Correspondent adds:
The 37th homecoming day of father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will be observed in the country today (Saturday).
On this historic occasion Bangladesh Awami League, its front organisations have taken elaborate programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner.
On this day in 1972, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had returned home from Pakistan after nine months of imprisonment during liberation war. The then West Pakistani occupation forces arrested Sheikh Mujib from his Dhanmondi 32 residence in the city at night on March 25, 1971, and took him to their country and kept him in prison.
The programmes includes the hoisting of national flag and the party flag atop the AL central office and the Bangabandhu Bhaban in the city and party offices across the country at 6 am. The party leaders and workers will gather at the Bangabandhu Bhaban to place wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
To mark the ‘Home Coming Day’ Awami League will hold a discussion meeting at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center (BCFCC) at 3.00 pm today. Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will preside over the discussion meeting.
A delegation led by industry and commerce secretary of AL and Commerce Minister Lt. Col. (Retd) Faruk Khan, Labour secretary Habibur Rahman Siraj and Religious secretary Advocate Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah will place wreaths at the mausoleum of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Tungipara in Goplalganj today, Saturday.
Meanwhile, Awami League Spokesman and LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam called upon the Awami League and its front organisations to observe the day with due respect and in a befitting manner by organising discussion and prayers across the country. He also urged the leaders, activists and people from all walks of life to make the discussion at BCFCC a success.
