Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Barrister Shafique Ahmed on Saturday said the government would give legal assistance to the family members of garment workers who were killed and injured in the Wednesday’s Savar building collapse. “It is very much necessary to provide the workers and their family members with legal aids under the current circumstances and the government is determined to do so,” he said at a press conference at Jatiya Press Club to mark the National Legal Aid Day.
The government for the first time will observe the day on April 28 across the country with a slogan “Garib-dukhir Mamlar Byay- Bangladesh Sarker Dey” keeping the poor litigants in mind for their legal services.
He said the government is set to provide all necessary legal assistance at free of cost from May 1 to the workers, who are not getting their legitimate rights and legal protection guaranteed by the constitution. He informed that a ‘Labour Law Aid Cell’ has been created in this regard.
The Law Minister said the government would bring necessary amendment in the existing law, if necessary, to stop recurrence of deadly incident like the Savar tragedy. The government would enact a new law, if necessary after scrutinising the present one.
Replying to another question the Law Minister said that he thinks that there is no necessity of forming a judicial committee at this moment.
He said a high-powered probe team formed by the Home Ministry has already started its investigation and a number of cases have already been lodged in this regard. Thus judicial probe committee cannot be formed until the investigation of the present committee is ended.
He further said the government already issued order to capture the people responsible for the Savar tragedy irrespective their identity.
