The government on Tuesday decided to withdraw two cases against Limon Hossain, filed by a Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officer two and a half years back on charges of keeping illegal arms and obstructing police duties. Home minister Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir said they had decided to withdraw the cases against Limon after receiving a letter from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairman, Prof. Mizanur Rahman.
“We want him to lead a normal life. Considering his young age, we’ve decided to withdraw the cases against him. Everyone concerned has been instructed to take steps in this regard,” the home minister added. However, he parried a question if the RAB personnel who shot Limon would be punished.
On receiving the news, Limon, who is currently undergoing treatment at a Dhaka hospital, profusely thanked the authorities, especially the Prime Minister and the home minister. “At last, the truth has come to light! I want no one to suffer like myself. I humbly request the authorities to arrange for my education and rehabilitation. I also request them to give me a job, so that I can survive,” he said.
He, however, declined to withdraw the case filed against RAB on charges of making him a cripple. “I want justice against those who have made me a cripple,” Limon said.
Additional public prosecutor M Alam Khan Kamal of the Jhalakathi judicial magistrate’s court told this correspondent that he would file a petition in the court for withdrawal of the cases against Limon Hossain after getting the necessary papers from the home ministry through the deputy commissioner (DC).
On June 26, NHRC chairman Mizanur Rahman Khan had asked Limon to withdraw the case, considering his future economic security. Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), a rights organisation, had criticised the NHRC chairman for his statement.
