Enam Ahmed detained, released
The police detained Bangladesh Nationalist Party vice-chairman M Hafiz Uddin Ahmed immediately after the declared programmes at a briefing on Sunday.
They also detained BNP chairperson’s adviser Enam Ahmed Chowdhury, who was, however, released in the evening. The police picked up Hafiz Uddin at about 6:30pm, when he was coming out from National Press Club after holding a briefing in which he declared that the ‘march of democracy’ programme would continue today and the alliance would enforce blockade of roads, railway and waterways till cancellation of the January 5 elections.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner for Ramna zona Shibly Noman confirmed the detention.
A team of police picked him up and took away, witnesses said.
Shibly, however, could not say the charges against Hafiz and where he was taken.
Earlier at afternoon, BNP chairperson’s adviser Enam Ahmed Chowdhury was detained by police from the capital’s Paltan intersection.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner (media and public relation) Masudur Rahman said that the police detained Enam at about 12:45pm on his way to Nayapaltan to join the scheduled rally of the party at part of the ‘march democracy’. He was later taken to the Detective Branch headquarters at Minto Road.
Enam, however, was released in the evening.
The police also detained five leaders of BNP’s women wing from in front of the party’s Nayapaltan office in the morning.
The leaders include Jannatul Ferdous, Sadia Ahmed Talukder, Roushan Ara Farid, Eliza Zaman and Shirin Aktar Reena.
The security around the BNP central office and Paltan intersection was tightened and traffic on the streets around the party office remained at halt since the morning.
Movements of pedestrians were also restricted as huge personnel of police and paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh were deployed in and around the area.
