The hanging body of a student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology was recovered from his room of a student dormitory adjacent to the main entrance of the university at Akhalia in Sylhet city.
The deceased is Arif Mia, a second-year social science student of the university and also a resident of Pakundia village in Kishoreganj, SUST proctor professor Kamruzzaman Chowdhury said.
He said that Arif hanged himself from the ceiling fan of his room at about 4:00am and the police recovered his body from the spot at about 8:00am.
The proctor said that the reason behind the suicide could not be ascertained immediately after the incident.
‘According to the teachers and and students of the social science department, Arif had been suffering from mental problems. Earlier, he also had tried to commit suicide and he was taking treatment for the problems,’ professor Kamruzzaman said.
He said that the body of Arif was sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination and the victim’s family members were informed of the incident.
