His appointment as prime minister’s special assistant cancelled
The government on Sunday cancelled the appointment of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Special Assistant Mahbubul Alam Hanif. The government decision followed the speculation that Hanif was asked to quit the post after his reported argument with the prime minister over selection of a candidate for Kushtia 2 constituency. Insiders say Hanif himself expressed desire to contest from the constituency while the prime minister wanted incumbent Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu as a grand alliance candidate.
Speaking to The Independent, Hanif said for the past few months he could not attend office due to his increased involvement in party activities.
“I sought her permission to be relieved from my position due to my engagement with party ahead of upcoming parliamentary elections. And the authorities concerned have accepted my resignation today,” he said.
“I’m now holding the post of joint general secretary of Awami League,” he said.
