The High Court yesterday appointed five amicus curiae (court’s friend) for suggesting it over its earlier rule to demolish Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Bhaban at Hatirjheel area in the city.
The amicus curiae are: former Attorney General Fida M Kamal, Barrister Rokon Uddin Mahmud, Barrister Sara Hossain, Advocate Monsurul Haque and Dr Syeda Rezwana Hasan.
A bench of the HC comprising Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain appointed the amicus curiae.
On October 3 last year, the HC issued the suo moto rule upon the concerned authorities to answer within two weeks why they should not be directed to demolish the BGMEA Bhaban, a high rise building.
The court passed the rule when Supreme Court lawyer DHM Muniruddin drew its attention to a news report published in The New Age on October 2, 2010 stating that BGMEA building has been erected without following concerned laws and approval of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk).
The respondents in the rule are RAJUK Chairman, Authorized Officer of RAJUK, President of BGMEA, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka and Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
