The High Court (HC) on Wednesday directed the Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities to take necessary steps immediately so that the day-to-day administrative functions can continue smoothly. The court also issued a rule asking the government and the authorities concerned of the JU to explain in four weeks time why they should not be directed to take appropriate action to ensure free access of teachers and students into the administrative building and to hold regular meetings of senate, syndicate, academic council and the finance committee.
The HC also asked the government, University Grants Commission, the JU administration, the inspector general of police and JU Teachers’ Association to take action in this regard.
In response to a writ petition, the HC bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed passed the order.
Prof Md Aminul Islam, chairman of fine arts department, Syed Mainul Alam, professor of philosophy department, KM Mohiuddin, chairman of government and politics department, and Raiyan Raji, a student of Bangla department, filed the petition on July 7 seeking necessary directives from the HC for taking necessary steps to run the day to day administrative function of the university.
In the petition, they said the regular administrative functions have ceased due to the movement of a section of teachers and students demanding the resignation of Vice Chancellor Anwar Hossain.
Some 60 teachers from June 20 continued sit-in movement besides the administrative building that houses offices of the Vice Chancellor, Pro-Vice Chancellor, registrar and other officials.
