Allegation of acid attack
HC judge’s son remanded in custody
High Court judge Salma Masud Chowdhury’s son Shafayat Ahmed was on Wednesday remanded in police custody for a day for interrogation in a case filed against him on charges of acid attack on one of his friends on August 5.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Nazrul Islam allowed him to be remanded in custody after the police had produced him in court. He was arrested in the morning.
The police said retired Biman official Asaduzzaman had filed the case accusing Salma Masud’s driver Mohammad Shahin and Jahid Hasan, one of the friends of her son, of carrying out an acid attack on his son Sabbir Jaman on August 5.
‘We arrested Shafayat on Wednesday morning after interrogation of Shahin and Jahid when they said they had thrown acid on Sabbir at Shafayet’s directive,’ police subinspector Mustafizur Rahman, also investigation officer of the case, told New Age.
He claimed Shahin and Jahid had given their statements in a Dhaka court in which they also named the son of the judge involved in the acid attack.
Shafayat, son of businessman Selim Ahmed and grandson of former justice ATM Masud Chowdhury, was a close friend of Sabbir, the police said.
He said they had arrested Shafayat at a furniture shop at Gulshan 1 on Wednesday morning.
