Sagar-Runi Murder Probe
HC summons IO to explain headway
The High Court on Tuesday summoned the investigation officer to explain what headway he could make in the probe in the sensational case twin murders of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi. A bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mohammad Ullah also directed the Rapid Action Battalion director general to ensure the presence of investigation officer Zafar Iqbal, a senior police superintendent, before the court at 10.30 AM on March 5.
The bench issued the order while hearing petitions filed by three suspects seeking bails in September 2013
stating that there was no progress in investigation in two years since the couple was murdered on February 11, 2012.
The couple was murdered in their reneted flat in the city in the presence of their minor child.
The court posted hearing of the bail petitions of the three accused—Bakul Miah, Kamrul Hasan and Rafiqul Islam—for March 5.
Supreme Court lawyers Masud Hossain Dolon and Khalifa Shamsun Nahar moved the bail petitions of the three suspects saying they were not named in the first information report of the Sagar-Runi murder case.
The three were arrested in the case of killing physician Narayan Chandra at the Chest Hospital at Mohakhali in August 2012 and they were later showed arrested in the two journalists’ murder case on October 10, 2012, submitted the lawyers.
Quoting newspaper reports, lawyer Dolon submitted that there has been no headway in the investigations in the two cases, and prayed for bails saying the suspects were languishing in the jail without trial.
RAB, which was assigned to probe by the High Court in April 2012 after the Detective Branch admitted its failure, earlier received the DNA test results from the same company but failed to make any breakthrough.
