Selim Mallik, who was arrested yesterday on suspicion of killing his mother, son and nephew in Keraniganj on Monday, confessed to the crime.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Faruk Hossain of Keraniganj said Selim killed his mother as she refused to give him Tk 60,000 that he demanded, and the two kids as they started to scream witnessing the murder.
He hacked his mother Shahida Begum Moyna and nephew Ahad with a kitchen knife leaving them dead on spot at their Keraniganj residence around 7:00am on Monday.
He also beat up his son Salman with an iron rod leaving him critically injured. Little Salman died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 5:30pm yesterday.
Shahida was 45 and the two kids were around five years old. Among Sahida’s three children, Selim is the only son.
Police quoting Selim said his business was incurring loss and he borrowed Tk 60,000 from different persons who were pressurising him to pay back.
He told this to his mother and asked her to arrange him some money. Refused, he plotted to kill his mother and loot her gold ornaments.
As per the plan, he took position on the roof of the house around 5:00am. When his father Ismail Hossain, a DCC employee, went out for work around 7:00am, he entered the house wearing a mask and hacked his mother to death.
On his way to flee the scene after looting seven tolas of gold ornaments of his mother, his mask slipped away and the kids began screaming.
He picked up an iron rod and severely beat them up. He hacked Ahad to ensure his death and left Salman senseless, police said.
He then locked the door from outside.
Finding the door locked, Ismail peeped through the window and saw the gruesome scene on his return home around 3:30pm.
Ismail and his neighbours then broke open the door.
On information police went to the spot around 10:00pm on Monday and found the two dead bodies and unconscious Salman, ASP Faruk Hossain told The Daily Star.
Their suspicion fell on Selim who was missing since the killing. Police called Selim over his cell phone and asked him to come to his father-in-law’s house.
Police arrested him on his arrival around 11:00am yesterday.
